To date the only proper investigaiton outside of the French criminal investigation to date as been by an independent world lift accident reconstruction expert appointed by the family. A background on the family appointed expert and his conclusion are contained in the Reports section.

The Investigation Process to date is as follows:

  • The French Police carried out some form of investigation in France in the 24hrs after the incident  - the scope and detail of which are currently unknown but form part of the judicial investigation in France.

  • The ship sailed across the Atlantic after the incident where it was investigated by OOCL and the Insurer's appointed engineers in Montreal.

  • Family appointed lift accident specialist visits the ship in Thamesport in July 2004 to carry out an independent investigation.

  • Family appoint lawyers in France to co-operate with the judicial investigation opened in the summer of 2004.

  • In 2007 the French investigating judge orders police interviews around the world to ascertain further facts.

The major investigation is the French judicial investigation that is still underway. The family is hoping to hear by the end of 2008 as to where the process will lead next.

There are various rumours circulating regarding the operation of the lift doors and Captain Roger Llewellyn which the famiy are vigorously chasing down around the world.

We would appeal to the following to come forward and provide information to the family who will pass the relevant information onto the French investigation:

Oisin Karron

Bryan Keenan

Also any of the passengers who were in the lift that day when Courtenay landed on top of the lift.
